Netflix strikes hard once again with the documentary series entitled Beckham which traces the personal and professional life of footballer David Beckham. A show which was released this Wednesday, October 4 on the platform and which was an opportunity for him and his wife, Victoria, to lift the veil on a very dark period in their lives.

For several years, the star couple formed by Victoria and David Beckham has been one of those who have made Internet users melt. For French fans of the former footballer, the date of October 4 was impatiently awaited! Indeed, the streaming platform Netflix has just released a new documentary series entitled Beckham, which relates over four episodes the personal and professional life of the former English striker. A docuseries directed by Fisher Stevens during which David Beckham and his wife Victoria speak openly about their exceptional careers, but also about the trials they had to go through as a couple.

To come back to the facts, it was in 1999 that the couple said yes, after the arrival of their first two children, Brooklyn in 1999 and Romeo James in 2002, David Beckham transferred from his club Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2003. While the footballer had to move to Spain, his wife and two children remained in England for the children’s schooling. A period of estrangement which was very trying for their marriage. Numerous accusations of deception then flourished in the tabloids accusing David Beckham of maintaining a relationship with his personal assistant, Rebecca Loos.

“It was the most difficult time for us”

In the fourth episode of the docuseries, the stylist and businesswoman looks back on this very complicated period of her life: “It was the most difficult time for us. Because it felt like the world was against us.» A situation that the former footballer also had a lot of difficulty coping with, as he explains: “When I first moved to Spain it was difficult because I had been part of a club and a family for my whole career, from the age of 15 to 27. (…) More importantly, I had no family. Every time we woke up, we felt like there was something else… We both felt at that moment that we weren’t losing ourselves, but drowning.»

He then adds that this period was also one of the most complicated of his life: “What we had was worth fighting for. There were days when I woke up and thought, “How am I going to get to work? How will I get to this training ground? How am I going to pretend everything is okay? I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes“.

A situation that the former Spice Girl took head on by deciding to move with her two children to Spain to be closer to her husband. Unfortunately all this did not go as planned: “I don’t think I’ve ever been so unhappy in my entire life”, she admits while honestly admitting to having “desired” to her husband for having to move. However, knowing her husband’s career challenges, Victoria Beckham confided that she “chose to internalize a large part of it”.
