The touching story of Waris Dirie
Today’s model Waris Dirie had a rocky childhood in Somalia. As a child of a nomad family, she went through traumatic experiences: at the age of five she was terribly circumcised, as a teenager she flees through the desert to Mogadishu to avoid forced marriage. She then moved to London, where she initially worked as a maid and later struggled to survive on the streets. At the age of 18, she was discovered by chance on the street by a photographer. From then on, she ran on the world’s catwalks for the most exclusive fashion brands. In addition, Waris, which translates as desert flower, campaigns for oppressed women in Africa.
She gave the Theater St. Gallen exclusive permission to bring her story to the stage as a musical. The music for “Wüstenblume” was composed by Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, who was also responsible for hits such as “99 Luftballons”. The musical was written by author and director Gil Mehmert.
