“Deutschland sucht den Superstar” started its 19th season on Saturday with a new jury. How was the show received by viewers?

For countless years, Dieter Bohlen (67) sat on the jury panel of “Deutschland sucht den Superstar”. But in early 2021 it became known that the pop titan would no longer be part of the casting show after season 18. “DSDS” started the new season on January 22 – with a completely fresh jury. But how did Florian Silbereisen (40), Ilse DeLange (44) and Toby Gad (53) go down with the viewers?

“Is that a new concept?”

“I know what’s coming. The Shitstorm is calculated. ‘DSDS’ was Dieter Bohlen for almost 20 years,” said Silbereisen in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag” before the start of the 19th season. However, the singer and show host was only partially right. Because while some viewers were disappointed with the new direction of the show, there were also many others who liked the show.

“The jury is nice, the candidates sing well. It’s no longer our #DSDS”, wrote a Twitter user. One other noted: “Why can the participants in #DSDS sing well now, is that a new concept?” You can accuse Dieter Bohlen and his jury of “a lot, but they never danced embarrassingly at the table”, said another user.

“The new concept of #DSDS could actually lead to the format finally disappearing into the infinite depths of the ratings cellar,” the next user speculated. In fact, according to RTL, only 2.65 million viewers aged three and over watched the season opener. In the previous year there were still around 3.25 million people who tuned in to the first episode.

“Stop bitching”

For others, however, the first episode was apparently successful. “This jury is a real pleasure compared to the last few years”, explained one user. “Stop complaining. Finally you can take a look at #DSDS”, agreed another. “I think it’s really good that #DSDS is so much friendlier now. You can also tell people that they can’t sing without being mean or making fun of their otherness. It entertains me a lot more than bullying,” summarized the next user.

On Tuesday, viewers will find out how the new jury will proceed. RTL will show the next episode on January 25th at 8:15 p.m. this is already available on RTL+.
