This is a most astonishing statement: according to the spokesperson for North Korea, Kim jong il, father of the current leader of the country, Kim Jong-un, at the head of this state between 1994 and 2011, would be the inventor of burritos, a rolled tortilla topped with beef and vegetables, as reported by the Sun, this Tuesday, January 4. Yet, as pointed out The Journal of Saône-et-Loire, this Friday, January 7, the term burrito would have appeared for the first time in the Mexican dictionary in 1895.
But North Korea has an answer for everything, the burritos would be called wheat wrap in this Asian country. Also according to the spokesman for the country, the father of Kim Jong-un, whose health worries, particularly appreciated this dish which would be in “booming” among North Koreans for several years. Pen News, a state media outlet, even released a video showing a burrito vendor in the capital, Pyongyang, as well asa mural of Kim Jong-il in a kitchen, alongside prepared burritos.

However, the Sun also collected the testimony of Hyun-seung Lee, born into a wealthy family in North Korea, who left the country in 2014. “I have never seen burritos or wraps sold in North Korea”, he assures. And to add: “The proportion of foreign food in the country is very low, there are only a few restaurants that offer it, and the variety of foods is quite low.” The North Korean also clarified that “Milk, cheese or spices are very lacking”. Before concluding : “And anyway, the majority of citizens do not have enough to buy foreign food.”
