Diego Maradona’s younger brother dies of heart attack

Former football player like his illustrious big brother, Hugo Maradona died of a heart attack at the age of 52.

Diego Maradona’s younger brother Hugo died on Tuesday in Naples at the age of 52, just over a year after the Argentinian genius passed away, the Neapolitan football club announced on its website. “Hugo Maradona is dead,” Napoli said in a brief statement, confirming information from the Italian media that he succumbed to a heart attack. The president of the club, Aurelio De Laurentiis, and the team “gather around Maradona’s family and unite with her in the pain caused by Hugo’s disappearance”, adds the text.

Hugo Maradona, father of three children living in Miami (Florida, south-eastern United States), was pronounced dead when help arrived at his home in Monte di Procida, in the Neapolitan metropolitan area. A former player, he had played in Italy, Austria, Spain, Argentina and Japan, before returning to Italy to settle there permanently and embrace a brief coaching career with amateur clubs in Naples.

He recently ran on a right-wing list in municipal elections, which the left ultimately won. He had barely arrived of age in the large southern port city, in 1987, recruited by Napoli, before being loaned to Ascoli. On September 20 of the same year, the two brothers clashed in a match won 2-1 by Napoli, recalled the daily Il Corriere del Mezzogiorno.
