Do I have to redo the mandatory tax declaration in 2024?

Last July, the 34 million French owners had to complete the new tax declaration concerning their real estate. Today, MoneyVox responds to Paume, who questions the obligation to complete this declaration for 2024.

Question from Palme, asked on November 17

The famous declaration of real estate, should it be redone for 2024? At home, nothing has changed, we still own our main residence. But I don’t know if this is a declaration to be renewed every year or not?

Good morning,

You are referring to the mandatory declaration for all owners put in place last spring by the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP) via the Manage my real estate service. This declaration was to make it possible to precisely determine the owners still liable for housing tax (secondary residence, rental housing) or the tax on vacant housing. The goal for the DGFiP is to ensure with the owner that the information held by the tax administration concerning the occupation situation of his property was correct. Owners then had until July 31, 2023 to complete their declaration, under penalty of a fine of 150 euros per undeclared property.

But then, should it be filled again in 2024? For you Palm, who explains that nothing has changed in your situation, no worries: the DGFIP reminds that a new declaration of occupation is only necessary in the event of a change in situation. You can therefore declare your changes as they happen, the service being open 365 days a year.

This is the case, for example, in the event of a move. If you remain the owner of your property and you move, you must indicate the new status of your property (secondary residence, rental, etc.). In the event of a sale, the declaration obligation will fall on the buyer, the new owner of the property.

On the other hand, for recalcitrant owners who still have not declared their property, despite the first reminders from the tax authorities, it is better to hurry. The first fines should in fact occur in January 2024.
