Currently available natively on a very limited list of games, the FSR 3 is expanding its influence thanks to the efforts of modders.
The competing technology of DLSS 3, which offers access to image generation to all graphics cards, is in fact somewhat behind. While waiting for official integration of FSR 3 on well-kept NVIDIA games like Cyberpunk 2077you can benefit from a significant performance boost on these titles through a mod.
FSR 3 integration facilitated by the community
AMD’s openness regarding its FidelityFX Super Resolution technology is certainly to be welcomed. The brand has notably made public the source code for DirectX12 and Unreal Engine 5, allowing the creation of mods to try it on games that do not yet support it.
The FSR 3 arrived last September, initially only on Forspoken AMD’s technical showcase (not very shiny). Its support was quickly provided to around twenty other games. However, the deployment of this technology takes time and expressly requires the collaboration of the developers of each title. The latest to have welcomed it, and obviously in a very good way, is the Ubisoft game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
For the moment, we are therefore not close to seeing FSR 3 arrive on titles with close links with NVIDIA. Fortunately, modders come to the rescue, including Nukem9. He shared via a Github page, cited in the source below, the files allowing to replace the image generation of DLSS 3 with that of AMD technology.
An unofficial and perfectible integration, but effective!
Unfortunately, mod means some instabilities and display problems. Despite everything, a user demonstrated in video the appreciable performance gains granted by AMD-style image generation on Cyberpunk 2077running the game on an RTX 3080.
The built-in benchmark tool appears to have gone astray, with the author of the video above reporting an average frame rate 50% higher than the FSR 2 in Quality mode. In addition to the CD Projekt RED title, its mod should work more or less correctly on other games supporting DLSS 3, such as Alan Wake 2.
Despite unofficial integration of this ilk, the FSR 3’s image generation clearly proves its effectiveness. AMD’s much more open technology therefore seems to have a bright future ahead of it, once it has been adopted by a wider range of titles.
