The famous brand of beauty products Dove has launched a new challenge: to educate young people to beauty without retouching.

Social networks are becoming more and more important in the lives of young people. To gain a global perspective on the issue, Dove conducted an unprecedented study on a panel of 506 girls aged 10 to 17. Through this study, it was revealed that 71% of young girls would modify or hide part of their body before posting a selfie on social media. Stark figures when we know the impact of social networks on young people physically and psychologically.

And for good reason, they take such an important place in our lives that modifying a selfie before posting it on social networks has become commonplace. Corn “The hunt for likes” as Dove calls it, raises a much bigger issue for youth mental health: Social media has a big impact as it encroaches on self-esteem. Dove’s goal is to to uninhibit beauty without filter.

An uninhibited beauty

Among the young girls who retouch their photos (very often using an application such as Photoshop or other), 48% are likely to have low self-esteem, 20% more compared to those who do not retouch their photos. The problem with social networks is the look of others and especially the way we look at ourselves. According to Dove, 29% of girls feel less beautiful after seeing photos on social media. Indeed, at the moment when young girls see photos which seem “perfect” to them on social networks, their self-esteem drops because of this “quest for perfection”.

But with her involvement in the Self-Esteem Project, Dove encourages young people to have confidence in them and helps them through social networks to accept themselves naturally, without artifice. The goal is to fight for the development of a certain illness over the long term, to the point of getting lost in this race for perfection. Moreover, we are observing that more and more influencers advocate naturalness and appear without filters on social networks: a good way to decompress about beauty without retouching.
