Duchess Meghan: She pays court costs of 75,000 euros

In May, Duchess Meghan suffered a defeat in her lawsuit against "Mail on Sunday" – which costs her dearly.

Duchess Meghan (38) takes action against the editor of "Mail in Sunday": Prince Harry's wife (35) had sued the British tabloid for publishing parts of a confidential letter Meghan wrote to her father. The Duchess suffered a first setback in May as parts of her lawsuit were dismissed by the court. Court documents released on Wednesday (July 29) now show that Meghan has to pay a large sum of legal costs.

According to the British daily "Express", the Duchess has agreed to pay £ 67,888 (around € 75,000). "After written submissions from both parties, the applicant agreed on July 22, 2020 to fully pay the accused's costs," the document said. If one adds their own legal costs, according to estimates by "Express" Meghan, the hearing cost around £ 100,000. If the case is negotiated in the coming year, the costs could increase in the millions. Meghan is demanding compensation from Associated Newspapers for alleged abuse of private information, copyright infringement, and data protection law violation.

In total, Meghan had filed suit for five articles – two from "Mail on Sunday" and three from "Mail Online" that were published in February 2019. Parts of the handwritten letter that the Duchess had sent to Thomas Markle (76) in August 2018 were printed in them. The court ruled in May that some of the allegations were "irrelevant" to the lawsuit. Others were "not sufficiently detailed" or would not affect the basics of the case, it said.
