Fresh colors, cheaper price: As an alternative to the VanMoof S5, the Dutch manufacturer is introducing the new VanMoof S4 and X4. That sounds promising.

When the VanMoof S5 (test report) and the agile VanMoof A5 (test report) were presented, the question arose: Why isn’t the successor to the S3 (test report) called VanMoof S4? Now the manufacturer provides the answer.
VanMoof S4 and A4 in pictures
The S4/X4 offers all of the “customer favorite features” according to VanMoof, but at a lower price point. At 2,198 euros, it’s a whole 1,300 euros cheaper than the S5/A5. At first glance, the differences are rather small.
Instead of an automatic 3-speed gearbox, the S4 only offers two gears, which are also engaged automatically. Otherwise, there is actually everything that distinguishes VanMoof pedelecs. All important differences between VanMoof S4 and S5 or A5 and X4 in a quick overview.
- The S4 has a speed sensor but no torque sensor
- The S4 only has two gears, the S5 has three
- The S4’s boost mode delivers a maximum torque of 59 Newton meters. The S5 is 68 Newton meters.
- The S4 only has two handlebar buttons, while the S5 has four buttons.
- The S4 comes in more colors than the S5.
- The S4 cannot be located via Apple’s Find My network.

The S4 also has a smartphone holder integrated in the steering head, frame-mounted LED light, the famous boost button, hydraulic disc brakes, alarm and tracking functions and a front motor. The practical kick lock for quickly locking the rear wheel is also included again.
Where exactly other technical differences between the VanMoof S5 and S4 lie, whether there are differences in material and weight, is left open by the Dutch manufacturer.

The new VanMoof S4 is available in the colors Evergreen, Sunbeam Yellow, Purple Fog and Foam Green at a price of 2,198 euros. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the e-bike will initially only be sold in the color Evergreen.
