East Tyrolean schools – Fairtrade and climate change were on the timetable

Two East Tyrolean middle schools from Lienz and Virgen not only relied on a normal school day with German or mathematics, but also had some special lessons on the program.

As a fair trade school, the Egger-Lienz middle school has been committed to developing countries and fair trade for small and marginal farmers from the Third World for years. Last year, students from class 2i, led by Esther Unterkreuter, distributed 200 Fairtrade bananas to passers-by in downtown Lienz on World Food Day. A sweet thank you from the highest level in Lienz. The school has already received several awards for its efforts. The municipality of Lienz was also pleased with the campaign and surprised the students with a sweet reward: a bar of Fairtrade chocolate and a certificate were given as a thank you from Mayor Elisabeth Blanik (SPÖ) and Environment Committee Chairwoman Gerlinde Kieberl (Greens). Not only the participating children were rewarded, but also all 267 students from MS Egger-Lienz.Short Film Day under the banner of climate changeIn the climate-energy model region (KEM) Sonnenregion Hohe Tauern (consisting of the communities of Matrei, Virgen, Prägraten and St. Johann im Walde), third and fourth grade middle school students from Virgen campaigned for the environment on “World Soil Day”. At least theoretically as part of their lessons: On a short film day on the topic of climate change, there were not only deep and detailed insights, but also the opportunity to ask the responsible experts questions about plastic avoidance, recycling options or the correct way to separate waste. The two films were made through the Short Film Institute Hamburg based. KEM manager Thomas Steiner, together with the teaching staff and director Gerhard Wörister, decided on the comic film “Glenn, the great nature lover”. This film is about land use. In “The Beauty”, the focus was on the issue of plastic in the world’s oceans. These were critically reviewed.
