Ellen Pompeo: She's back in front of the camera for "Grey's Anatomy"

The shooting of the 17th season of the medical series "Grey's Anatomy" has started. Actress Ellen Pompeo greets with a selfie from the set.

After the shooting of the 16th season of the medical series "Grey's Anatomy" had to be canceled in March due to the corona pandemic, the actors are now back in front of the camera. Filming for the new, 17th season has begun, as leading actress Ellen Pompeo (50) alias Dr. Meredith Gray writes on Instagram.

Pompeo has published a photo of her in surgical clothing and face mask next to her colleague Richard Flood (38, "Killing Kennedy") alias Dr. Cormac Hayes can be seen. In the comment, she explains that "7,000 health care workers have died of Covid" since shooting was canceled in the spring. Therefore, dedicate the 17th season of the series to the deceased and all those who still hold the position. "I hope we make you proud."

Season 17 is about the corona pandemic

The new season will address the corona pandemic, as Krista Vernoff (46), showrunner and executive producer of "Grey's Anatomy", announced in a panel discussion at the Television Academy. "There is no way to do a long-running medical series without mentioning the greatest medical crisis of our time," she said. "I feel like our show has the opportunity and the responsibility to tell some of those stories."

When exactly the season will be shown on TV is still unclear. In Germany, ProSieben has been showing the final episodes of the 16th season every Wednesday (8:15 p.m.) since the beginning of September. Due to Covid-19, the season is shorter than planned. It consists of only 21 episodes and does not end with the original finale.
