Elon Musk touts his ‘incredible’ Cybertruck, but still pushes back its release

Elon Musk released the panoply of superlatives to approach the Cybertruck. In the meantime, this does not hide the fact that the first deliveries are still a little delayed.

We no longer count the cumulative delays on the Cybertruck. The model announced in 2019 was initially expected for 2020, an untenable delay. At the end of January 2023, Tesla’s revolutionary pickup was scheduled to go into production this summer. It has just been postponed again to the end of the third quarter, finally accompanied by a ” I hope so “ of Elon Musk, during the presentation of the financial results for the first quarter of 2023. Which means concretely that it could still be postponed until later.

It is only with the party accompanying the delivery of the first copies produced that the final technical data sheet of the model will be known, as well as its price range according to the updated grids. In the meantime, we have to be content with the superlatives that Elon Musk uses to address the subject of the long-awaited pickup on the American market.

Elon Musk oversells the Cybertruck, at the risk of disappointing

A good product normally sells itself. If the spec sheet and skills of the model are beyond the norm and the expectations of the customers, there is no need to go to great lengths to present it.

The fact that Elon Musk deploys so much energy to praise the model begins to raise doubts. Elon Musk qualifies the Cybertruck as follows:

  • It’s a great product. »
  • In my opinion, this is a fantastic product, worthy of being in the pantheon. (“hall of famer” in English)
  • This is an amazing product, a world famous product. »
  • A product like this only comes around once in a while. »

In just two speeches, Elon Musk seems to be doing a bit too much. He seems particularly proud of his pickup, which is currently only in its Alpha phase of assembling test models. Wanting to describe it as an incredible vehicle, it is currently creating high expectations for its most fervent fans. He thus exposes himself to strong criticism if the first customers do not share his opinion. It’s not like Elon Musk knows that Tesla customers can be both ultra-enthusiastic and downright ruthless in their reviews, if they’re disappointed.

Elon Musk’s communication strategy is a double-edged sword. It will not really reassure investors and analysts, who are not fooled by so little. He is going to create high expectations with his fans at best.

What to expect at the Tesla Cybertruck delivery event?

The first deliveries are staged by Tesla in the form of an American show. The last event of this type was for the handing over of the keys to the first Tesla Semis. There were also some for the Model Y and 3 a few years earlier. It has become one of Tesla’s rituals.

A few handpicked customers are invited to take possession of their new vehicle on the occasion of the event, which becomes a party. Tesla will probably organize a fairly complete presentation of the machine’s capabilities: acceleration performance, crossing, towing…

The (chaotic) launch of the Cybertruck project took place in 2019. Apart from the general look, there is not much in common between the concept presented and the vehicle that will be delivered. Elon Musk wanted to add features, like being amphibious, but he may well have removed some of them. This is what we are waiting to find out.

After the event that formalizes the start of deliveries, US purchase order holders will quickly receive an update on specifications and prices. For those who will maintain their order, however, it will be necessary to be patient. Even if the event goes well at the end of the third quarter, as Elon Musk now estimates, it will still be several months before production ramps up enough to meet demand. It’s only planned for 2024, and the majority of customers probably won’t receive anything until 2025, or even 2026.
