Emmy Awards 2020: What can the nominees expect in the corona year?

The Corona crisis is influencing this year's Emmy Awards. How does the award ceremony work? And who has the best chance of winning?

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented in Los Angeles on September 20, 2020. The award ceremony will be a little different this year. Due to the corona pandemic, the Emmys will not be handed over on the Microsoft Theater stage and there will be no show on the red carpet.

The Emmy Awards at the time of the corona pandemic

Jimmy Kimmel (52) is hosting this year's Emmy Awards and will host live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles – without an audience. The multifunctional arena, which otherwise hosts the Los Angeles Lakers' NBA home games, was chosen because of its size for the broadcast. Reginald Hudlin, one of the Emmy producers, explained in an interview with the US industry journal "Variety" at the end of August that the crew can best comply with the strict corona-safe conditions.

In addition, thanks to the regular sports broadcasts, the Staples Center has the technical prerequisites to switch to the planned 140 locations where the nominees are staying. The nominees "can be at home, in the garden, in a hotel or on the side of the road. It doesn't matter, the main thing is that they feel comfortable. But we want every nominee, if logistically possible, to put each nominee on the show" Ian Stewart, President of Done + Dusted, whose company is involved in the production of the Emmys.

In contrast to the Creative Arts Emmys, the producers of the Primetime Emmy Awards do not want to send pre-recorded acceptance speeches, but rather switch them live to the winners. The dress code will be more relaxed in 2020. Instead of evening wear, one or the other radiant winner could be seen in sweatpants or pajamas. Some of the celebrities who announce each category will be at the Staples Center, others will be added. There should also be music numbers and viewers should get a glimpse behind the scenes during the live broadcast.

Who's Creaming at the 2020 Emmy Awards?

In the main categories (excluding the technical categories), two HBO series have the edge. "Watchmen" and "Succession" won eleven and ten nominations respectively, followed by the Netflix series "Ozark" with nine and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" from Amazon Prime Video with eight potential chances of winning.

Who Will Follow Game of Thrones as Best Drama Series? The nominees are "Better Call Saul", "The Crown", "The Handmaid's Tale", "Killing Eve", "The Mandalorian", "Ozark", "Stranger Things" and "Succession". "Curb Your Enthusiasm", "Dead to Me", "The Good Place", "Insecure", "The Kominsky Method", "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", "Schitt's Creek" and "What We Do in the Shadows "hope. "Little Fires Everywhere", "Mrs. America", "Unbelievable", "Unorthodox" and "Watchmen" have a chance as the best miniseries.

Is Jennifer Aniston (51) getting her second Emmy? In 2002 she won the award for best actress in a comedy series for her role in "Friends". In 2020 she was nominated for "The Morning Show" as best leading actress in a drama series. Maybe Olivia Colman (46) in "The Crown" or Laura Linney (56) in "Ozark" are making the price controversial. It would be a real surprise if Zendaya (24, "Spider-Man: Homecoming") wins an award for "Euphoria".

In the category of best leading actor in a drama series, Brian Cox (74) seems to have the edge for his role in "Succession". In the "Leading Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie" category, it seems like a head-to-head race between Hugh Jackman (51) in "Bad Education" and Mark Ruffalo (52) in "I Know This Much Is True" out, the latter plays twins, one of whom is schizophrenic. The three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep (71) can bag her fourth Emmy, she is nominated for her supporting role in "Big Little Lies".

Will the stars from "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" dominate the comedy categories again or will the actors from "Schitt's Creek" prevail this time? The series with, among others, Eugene Levy (73, "American Pie – Like a Hot Apple Pie") and Catherine O'Hara (66, "Kevin – Alone At Home") ended in the spring after six seasons. These slightly different Emmy Awards in Corona year 2020 could well have one or the other surprise in store.
