Italy wants to tighten corona measures

As in other European countries, the Omikron variant is spreading rapidly in Italy. The government has already extended the state of emergency, but new measures are also being discussed. According to a report, compulsory vaccination for all employees would be possible.

The Italian government is considering new corona measures up to a general vaccination requirement for employees. “Some measures, such as the introduction of mandatory outdoor masks, could soon be taken,” Franco Locatelli, one of the government’s key scientific advisors, told the Corriere della Sera newspaper. This is to prevent a sharp increase in new infections over the holidays.

In addition, the compulsory vaccination could be extended to all employees from January, the newspaper said. So far, vaccination is only required for employees in health care, schools, the police and the military.

Prime Minister Mario Draghi could, according to the newspaper report, after a meeting with the ministers on December 23, introduce an obligation that vaccinated people also have to show a negative test in order to gain access to busy places such as discos and stadiums. Negative tests could also be required for entry to cinemas and theaters. So far, people who have been vaccinated or have recovered have free access to seats in bars and restaurants, museums, cinemas, clubs and sporting events.

According to the National Health Institute (ISS), the Omikron variant is spreading rapidly in Italy. Just a few days ago, the government extended the Corona emergency to March 31. In addition, all visitors from EU countries must submit a test before they leave.
