Ethiopia: Ethiopia postpones parliamentary elections again

The TPLF dominated Ethiopia for a good 25 years until Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018 and ousted them. The upcoming elections are seen as an important test for Abiy: He came to power following the resignation of his predecessor and has since initiated a number of reforms. Among other things, because of his peace agreement with long-term rival Eritrea, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019.

However, ethnic tensions and conflicts in the multi-ethnic state with its around 112 million inhabitants have intensified during his tenure and criticism of Abiy is growing. The new parliament to be determined elects the head of government. There is not yet a new date for the ballot.
