BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Union will grant Ukraine 1.5 billion euros a month in 2023 and continue to support it in the conflict against Russia, Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday.

The President of the European Commission spoke after the 27 leaders of the bloc spoke at the Brussels summit which ended on Friday of their continued support for Ukraine, on the 240th day of the war.

She said the EU has so far allocated 19 billion euros to Ukraine.

“It is very important for Ukraine to have a predictable and stable flow of money,” she said, adding that Kyiv estimated its monthly needs at 3-4 billion euros “essentially “.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky addressed EU leaders via video link on Thursday, saying Russian missiles and Iranian drones had damaged a third of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as winter approached.

Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was also exploring ways to help Ukraine restore water, energy and electricity supplies.
