“As long as we only have nightmares, while you do not wake up with the same nightmares in the night, there is a distance between us,” she said on Wednesday at a forum of the truth commission for former FARC fighters and their victims. “I have to admit that I am surprised that we cry and that I don’t see a tear in you,” she said with a broken voice. “One day we’ll have to cry together.”
The rebels abducted large numbers of people during the internal conflict in Colombia. The most prominent hostage was the green presidential candidate Betancourt, who had been in the hands of the FARc for over six years. According to the Colombian Attorney General, over 500 people were killed while held hostage by the rebels.
The last FARC commander and current party leader Rodrigo «Timochenko» Londoño asked the victims of the kidnappings for forgiveness. “With the kidnappings we caused great suffering, not only among the abductees, but also with the wives and husbands, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters,” said the former rebel chief. “Many kidnapping victims have been treated unworthily, they suffered from physical and psychological aggression that unnecessarily aggravated their suffering.”
