Unknown people on Google Maps are apparently playing an April Fool’s joke at the expense of the Union. Numerous entries from business or party offices suddenly have a gender asterisk. And that on the day on which a gender ban comes into force in CSU-led Bavaria.

Unknown people have counteracted several entries about the Union on the Internet map service Google Maps. Anyone who entered the search term “CDU” got this as a result, among other things: CDU federal offices (Konrad-Adenauer-Haus), Klingelhöferstrasse 8. The CDU party headquarters is located there in Berlin.

When asked, a spokesman for the federal party said: “We confirm the incidents and reserve the right to take legal action, which we are currently examining.” It is still unclear whether the changed entries were intended as a joke for April 1st or as criticism of the negative attitude of the CDU and CSU with regard to gender.

This Monday, a gender ban came into force in CSU-led Bavaria. From now on, the use of gender-sensitive gender language is expressly prohibited in schools, universities and authorities in the Free State.

On Twitter, users shared screenshots of further changed CDU entries on Google Maps. For some, the gendered titling has already been reversed. The entry “CSU parliamentary groups in the Bavarian state parliament,” for example, is still displayed.
