If an unknown number calls you and a taped English voice responds with the phrase “this is the Federal Police Department, your ID card has ceased”, you are dealing with a new scam on the phone.
As you continue, you will be prompted to press 1 on your smartphone to connect to Interpol. If you do that, you will be connected to a real contact person who will also inform you in English that there is an arrest warrant or that there is a gang of burglars in your area.
The aim of the call is for you to give out your personal information. These are said to be needed for the further treatment of the case, reports the Vienna police on Facebook. The calls can originate from both landline numbers and mobile numbers. As soon as you realize you are receiving a call of this nature, it is best to hang up immediately and do not engage in conversation.
