Fine of up to 5,000 euros: risky top seller on Amazon

BARGAIN

At Amazon, the controversial speed camera detector from OOONO is one of the most popular products. Anyone who uses the device may risk large fines and even imprisonment.

On Amazon Prime Day there were thousands of offers from the mail order company. The “OOONO CO-Driver NO1”, a speed camera detector with a deliberate choice of name, which legally lies in a gray area, was among the best-selling products on the second Prime Day. The device is now being offered again at the normal price (50 euros). However, it is still a top seller in the “Car Alarm Systems” category.

OOONO can warn you about speed traps in real time in the car. To do this, the device relies on its own community and the well-known Blitzer.de platform. Each owner can also report speed cameras themselves. In addition, the gadget also offers reports for dangers such as broken down vehicles or police and fire brigade operations.

  • Warns of speed cameras and road hazards in real time

  • Connection to the smartphone via Bluetooth

You can get the OOONO CO-Driver NO1 after Prime Day again at the regular price of 49.95 euros. The promotional price was just under 40 euros.

This is how OOONO works

OOONO connects to your cell phone via Bluetooth. In the event of danger, the gadget emits beeps and different flashing signals. The device automatically activates the associated app on a connected phone, which runs in the background. There is no subscription or other additional costs.

Legally in the gray area

The legal situation in Germany is not easy. Pure speed camera detectors may not be operated or carried. Since OOONO also warns of other dangers, this is not entirely true. The device should fall into the area of speed camera apps. The same applies here: the driver may not use apps of this type and basically no navigation apps or navigation devices that display speed cameras.

However, this does not apply to passengers. Here the use is not punishable and that is exactly why the product from OOONO bears the name “CO-Driver”. So it’s relatively simple: if you’re traveling alone with the device, you risk a fine; if there’s a passenger with you, they’re allowed to use the device.

These penalties are imminent

Anyone caught with a speed camera or radar detector in Germany faces a fine of 75 euros and a point in Flensburg. In addition, officers are allowed to secure equipment if necessary.

However, penalties can be significantly more expensive abroad. There are different regulations from country to country, sometimes there is a strict ban on carrying, sometimes only a ban on use. The most blatant punishment is threatened in Luxembourg: According to the ADAC, anyone who actively uses a speed camera detector like the one from OOONO for speed camera warnings risks a fine of up to 5,000 euros or even a prison sentence of eight days to one year.
