A wombat here, a cabbage there, plus a real Lady Gaga and heavy metal: these are the unusual nicknames of the British royals.

In one respect, the British royal family does not differ from all other households: Instead of the actual names of the individual family members, various nicknames and pet names are called through Buckingham Palace. The children of Prince William (39) and Duchess Kate (40) are apparently responsible for the latest of them.

Duchess Camilla (74) revealed some time ago that she is called “Gaga” by George (8), Charlotte (6) and Louis (3). This is what she did, according to The Mirror in the right setting publicly – in a conversation with Lady Gaga. Meanwhile, the children should address their husband Prince Charles (73) as “Grandpa Wales”. In addition, the three should want to know everything about their “Granny Diana”.

A wombat named William

They stand in the good tradition of their own father. Because Prince William is said to have had his problems calling Queen Elizabeth II (95) “Grandmother”. Instead, a “Gary” came out of him. Prince George, on the other hand, calls the Queen “Gan-Gan” – it’s also easier to say than “Great Grandmother”.

Speaking of William: He also has an unusual pet name that his late mother Diana (1961-1997) is said to have given him – “Wombat”. A joint trip to Australia in Williams’ early childhood is said to have led to the nickname, since then he “simply can’t get rid of it. (…) Not because I look like a wombat – or maybe I do?”

The queen, on the other hand, liked to be called “cabbage” (“cabbage”) by her late prince consort Philip (1921-2021). He also liked to call her Lilibet – just like Duchess Meghan (40) and Prince Harry (37) baptized their second child about seven months ago.

“Tungsten” Meghan?

In a conversation with James Corden (43), it became clear that Duchess Meghan has several pet names for her husband. They range from “Prince Harr” through “Haz” to a short “H”. He counters with a more conventional “Meg”.

Much more can be interpreted into the nickname that Meghan is said to have received from her father-in-law Prince Charles. Supposedly he christened it “Tungsten”, meaning “Wolfram”. This has the highest melting point of all metals and is considered almost impossible to bend, but also difficult to handle at times…
