G20 summit in autumn: Indonesia invites Putin and Zelenskyj

G20 summit in autumn
Indonesia invites Putin and Zelenskyj

In November, the G20 will meet on the Indonesian island of Bali. The members discussed for a long time whether Russia should be allowed to participate in view of the war of aggression against Ukraine. The compromise formula is now: Yes, but Ukraine should also come. Putin has already agreed, Zelenskyj is still hesitating.

Indonesia has invited the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to the G20 summit in Bali in November. Indonesian President Joko Widodo confirmed this compromise in the dispute over Russia’s exclusion from the G20 because of its attack on Ukraine.

Western countries, most notably the US, had pushed for Russia to be excluded from the meetings of the group of 20 leading industrial and emerging countries. Indonesia holds the G20 presidency this year and has refused to bow to Western pressure. Brazil and China were also opposed to kicking out Russia. US President Joe Biden, among others, then proposed an invitation from Ukraine, which does not belong to the G20.

According to Widodo, he spoke to Kremlin boss Putin on Thursday. “On this occasion, President Putin thanked Indonesia for the invitation to the G20 summit and said that he would attend.”

Zelenskyj said on Wednesday that the Indonesian President had invited him to Bali. “I am grateful for the invitation to participate in the G20 summit,” Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. The Ukrainian has not yet confirmed his participation. Indonesia is hosting the G20 summit this year. The meeting is on 15./16. Planned for November on the island of Bali.
