Gabon: Ali Bongo placed under house arrest

Aug 30 (Reuters) – Gabon’s President Ali Bongo was placed under house arrest on Wednesday, army officers said in a statement read out on television after an earlier announcement that they would seize power in the country.

Ali Bongo had just been re-elected to the presidency for a third term but a few minutes after the announcement of his victory, officers announced in a televised intervention that they had taken power, denouncing a truncated ballot.
