Samsung will apparently use plastic backs for the new devices in the S22 series. While we’re kind of used to it, Samsung revealed a curious detail about the new smartphones in a blog post. Because the plastic used should consist of old fishing nets and should therefore be a little more sustainable.

Between 4.8 and 12.7 million tons of garbage end up in the sea every year. Around ten percent of this is taken up by fishing nets that are thrown into the sea when they are no longer needed. However, the so-called ghost nets do not really decompose and so they destroy entire ecosystems. Samsung launched the “Galaxy for the Planet” project last year and has now announced a big step in it.
The South Koreans want to reduce plastic waste in the sea by using the ghost nets for the plastic in their products. The first major use of recycled plastic awaits us as early as Wednesday at the Unpacked event. The recycled material will find its place throughout Samsung’s future lineup and the backs of some models in the new Galaxy range are likely to be made from the fishing nets. In doing so, the company not only wants to help the environment directly, but at the same time encourages people to use less harmful plastic and to think more about environmentally friendly materials.
“Galaxy for the Planet” is scheduled to be completed by 2025
With the environmental project “Galaxy for the Planet”, Samsung wants to establish more sustainable products on the market and at the same time ensure a smaller ecological footprint. To achieve this, the company released an agenda to be enforced through 2025 and beyond.

It all started with the use of ghost nets in the new Galaxy series. In addition, the plastic from the packaging of mobile devices should disappear and the energy consumption of chargers in standby mode should drop to less than 0.005 watts. In addition, Samsung wants to reduce the waste generated during production and also reduce electronic waste.

Last year, the manufacturer Fairphone showed how far you can go with sustainability in the electronics industry and what consequences this has for the products. The Fairphone 4 is a modular smartphone that is largely made from recycled materials and offsetting e-waste. As a compromise, you have to accept rather weak hardware and a higher price when you buy it.
