(Reuters) – The Israeli army announced on Friday that it had killed three hostages in Gaza identified “by mistake” as a “threat” and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

Three hostages were killed by “friendly fire” in Gaza and the armed forces take full responsibility for the incident, an Israeli army spokesperson said.

The IDF said in a statement that it had “identified the three Israeli hostages as a threat” and that the soldiers therefore fired in their direction.

More than 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza and some have been declared dead in absentia by Israeli authorities.
