There is still no progress in the collective bargaining dispute between Deutsche Bahn and the German Train Drivers’ Union (GDL). As early as December 19th, the GDL had already voted 97 percent in favor of expanding the “labor disputes” in a strike vote. Now the passenger transport strike will take place from January 10th at 2 a.m. to January 12th at 6 p.m.
Deutsche Bahn wanted to have the strike banned by the courts and had submitted an urgent application to the Hesse state labor court for an interim injunction against the strike. However, this was rejected. The strike will continue.
This is what the railway’s emergency plan looks like
After all, Deutsche Bahn has drawn up an emergency timetable. It is intended to ensure a very limited train service in long-distance, regional and S-Bahn traffic. Longer trains with more seats should also be used in long-distance transport. However, the railway advises against unnecessary trips.
You can now find out which trains are running and which are not in the DB Navigator and in the train travel information. In cities, passengers should switch to buses and, if necessary, the subway if S-Bahn trains are not running.
Tickets remain valid
The ticket is still valid for the journey to the original destination, even with a changed route, but the train connection is no longer applicable. Only a new seat reservation may be necessary. But you can cancel the old one free of charge, the railway says. If you decide not to travel completely, you can cancel your ticket free of charge.

Deutsche Bahn has set up a hotline especially for the strike: 08000 996633. Customers can get information here day and night.
What the GDL demands
The GDL is committed to better working conditions. The GDL is calling for a reduction in working hours from 38 to 35 hours with full salary, 555 euros more per month and a 3,000 euro inflation compensation bonus.
At the same time, the GDL criticizes the conditions at Deutsche Bahn and the high manager salaries and bonuses. There were also strikes in November and mid-December 2023.
