Despite what its name suggests, Kluster is a French creation. This little board game was born in France, and more precisely in Orléans.

Until December 24, Clubic opens a sound box for you every day advent calendar 2022 : the opportunity to discover unusual or practical gadgets, gift ideas for oneself or for loved ones.

If its creators, Borderline Éditions, had any doubts about its success, it had to be quickly dispelled by the crowdfunding campaign carried out on the KissKissBankBank site in early 2019. The objective was to raise 3,000 euros to finance the game. Finally, 30,192 euros were collected, more than ten times what the publisher had hoped for!

diabolical simplicity

This success is undoubtedly due to the simplicity and originality of Kluster. Up to 4 players can take part in a game by sharing the 24 magnets of different sizes and shapes. In turn, everyone places one in the area delimited by an orange rope.

The winner is the one who gets rid of all his magnets first. You must therefore be very careful not to attract those closest to you by depositing yours! If this happens, the player picks up all the pieces stuck together.

At first glance, Kluster looks very simple, but it’s not that simple. The length of the rope is calculated so that the 24 magnets can be placed well, but not as easily as it seems. In order to achieve this, it will sometimes be necessary to trick and take risks.

You will have to be bold!

We can for example move the magnets already deposited thanks to the magnetic field of his own, but beware of the chain reaction! It is also possible to move the orange rope to facilitate the installation of its magnet. This risks disturbing the stability of those already in place: if they stick to each other, they are for the unfortunate player. This is a real magnetic minefield!

Magnets can be arranged horizontally or vertically, which changes the range of their magnetic field. The more adventurous can also place them so close to each other that the slightest disturbance will trigger a chain reaction…

Additional constraints

And if we want to complicate the game a little? Then it is possible to download the special maps designed by the publisher and print them. When a player has only one or two magnets in his possession, he must draw a card and respect the constraint it indicates. For example: “You can only use your left hand to play” or “You must not touch the string during your turn”. You know what I mean…

The box of the game mentions that Kluster is prohibited for children under 14 years old. This limitation is due to restrictions in force in some countries regarding the handling of magnets by children.

None of this is valid in France: children from the age of 6 can absolutely play Kluster in the company of adults who will check that they do not put the magnets in their mouths.
