Guilty pleasures in your own four walls

At some point it will be so far for each of us: We have to grow up. And that includes a decent life, doesn't it? We once asked our colleagues. And found out that each of us has one or the other guilty pleasure in the household …

A bar of chocolate in the evening, watching the latest reality TV show, or reading reviews on the Internet for hours – we all have habits that we're not proud of, but which still make us happy in a quirky way. Guilty pleasures are vices that we prefer to keep to ourselves – but often we don't want to without them.

Not without my junk drawer

The idea was actually to write an article about things that as an adult you no longer need in your own household. We then wandered off into an almost nostalgic openness to the things in our household, which are mostly chaotic and lumpy, but in no way tidy or tidy. And which we don't want to miss despite Marie Kondo:

1. Half-and-half dinnerware sets

Omma's old favorite cup, the 0.5-liter beer mug from the 1995 concert, a cereal bowl with an ugly smiley face that we got from our favorite aunt: Probably only at least of us have suitable tea services for tableware, along with top-polished silverware . Most of the time, the contents of domestic kitchen cupboards are more reminiscent of a hidden object than a neat row of matching porcelain pieces – our motley dishes are curated with love and memories.

2. The chair, somewhere under the pile of clothes

Do we really have to say more? Hardly likely. It is probably an irrefutable law of nature that in every bedroom or dressing room in the world there must be at least one object that is too-good-for-the-laundry-but-not-good-enough-for-the-closet clothes got to. No matter whether classic (the chair), sporty (the unused exercise bike) or comfortable (the armchair – or a whole sofa for the very daring) – we don't want to miss it, our strong lifesaver, clothes keeper, the rock in the surf for our clothes.

3. There is a rumble in the chamber

Happy the lucky ones who can enjoy the luxury of having their own storage room in the apartment! Because where we as students had to think about halfway creative storage options for drying racks, beer crates and various unused kitchen appliances (because who uses their sandwich maker more than once a year?), The glorious storage room is today. Which – no matter how big or small it may be – grabs everything we have to get out of the way, if necessary with a good kick on the door so that it stays closed. And who can irretrievably disappear half of the then unloved objects, especially when you need them. Is it because of our organizational system? Hardly, because that doesn't exist. But there are a few surprises when mucking out.

4. The key post hair tie junk bin

Where else is the front door key? In the small basket in the kitchen, right next to chewing gum, hair clips and other curiosities that we could spontaneously ask for in everyday life. Because regardless of whether it is a bowl, basket or bowl – everything finds its place here that we would otherwise lose too quickly. And so the apparent disorder finds order. Because we don't have a system!

5. The somewhat too dry roommates

Plants make your home much more homely, are good for the air and just look pretty. It's just stupid that they all want something different: Plenty of water, no, that was too much, there's not enough sun here for me, it's too warm here, are you crazy ?! Fortunately, they can't talk. Unfortunately, in the heat of the moment, we then forget about them and in the end we can only stroke the brown leaves sadly. But hey, they are still living beings! You don't just throw them away, after all, they also have feelings. The dried up plants: a memorial of oblivion – and the last glimmer of hope.

6. Crime, kitsch and chocolates

The eyes were once again bigger than the proverbial stomach: The well-known pile of books that I still read next to the bed, the sofa or on the shelf grows and grows and grows – and that, although we have firmly decided, more to read! If only it were that simple … Really good books let us escape into strange worlds, we can experience adventures, fall in love again or learn something new with every page. And where do you get the time for it? Well, whether we like it or not, we have to shovel that free. To collect five new treasures as soon as we've finished reading a book!
