Hard-hitting rules for e-cars: consumer advocates want new environmental bonus

With the traffic light coalition, e-car buyers can expect new rules relating to the environmental bonus. But the regulations are not only intended to become stricter for hybrids. If consumer advocates have their way, funding will soon no longer be allowed for all pure e-cars.

It’s over at 40,000 euros: consumer protection does not want to promote luxury e-cars

The sharp increase in new registrations of e-cars in Germany is also related to the high level of funding. But the coalition partners have already decided: New rules must be found. According to the head of the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (VZBV), Klaus Müller, one should still do this proceed harder than planned.

Müller demands one general upper limit for eligible e-cars of 40,000 euros (Source: dpa via t-online). “I would encourage the federal government to take a clear cut here.”

The number will sound familiar to some people interested in e-cars: the funding guidelines currently stipulate that if the net list price is below 40,000 euros, a total of 6,000 euros will be subsidized by the state, plus a further 3,000 euros from the manufacturer.

Above 40,000 euros, but below 65,000 euros, the state pays “only” 5,000 euros, the manufacturer pays 2,500 euros. The following applies: The costs of the basic version are decisive for the list price of every electric car. So far, customers and manufacturers have been able to benefit when actually more expensive electric cars are sold, as long as they are in the framework of the basic equipment.

Used e-cars need a chance

For Müller this is the wrong way: “You don’t have to subsidize every luxury car from the state, even if it’s an electric car.” But why is the head of consumer protection opposed to financial relief for customers? Man I urgently need a functioning used car market for electric cars. And that should be the smaller and medium-sized cars in particular, ”said Müller.

Typical misconceptions about electric cars: do you know them all?

Used e-cars are less interesting because the environmental bonus is only paid once per vehicle. When it comes to reselling, it is seldom possible to achieve a good price. For a quick switch to the electric car would be attractive used but an important step, since not all consumers can afford new cars – regardless of the environmental bonus.

Funding should also only be given to demonstrably climate-friendly e-cars, not plug-in hybrids that mainly run on combustion engines. Corresponding plans are already in place and should take effect in the coming year.
