The hostage-taking in a small store in rue d’Aligre, in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, ended on Tuesday morning. The man who had retained two women surrendered and was arrested, announced the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, on Twitter. The last hostage, safe and sound, was taken in by the police from the Research and Intervention Brigade (BRI). She was transported to a Parisian hospital for examinations.

The 56-year-old man – already known to police for a psychiatric history – had taken two women hostage in a shop near Place de Bastille, a “hardware store” according to a police source.
In the middle of the evening, one of the two women taken hostage was released by the suspect. The latter is “unharmed”, said the police headquarters in a press release. Negotiations are underway to get the second victim out.
According to a police source at AFP, the madman, who presented himself under the identity of a former Tunisian magistrate, is notably known to the police services for having harassed a local doctor at his medical office.

Armed with a knife when he entered the store shortly after 3:30 p.m., he said he wanted to speak to Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti. According to the entourage of the minister at LCI, the Minister of Justice informed the negotiators that he was at their disposal.

A large security perimeter
Since the start of the hostage-taking, the various accesses to the rue d’Aligre, known for its many food shops and its market, were blocked by police officers and the perimeter was also secured by soldiers from the Sentinel force deployed. as part of the Vigipirate plan.
An investigation was opened including the head of “kidnapping” and was entrusted to the police station of the 12th arrondissement, confirmed the Paris prosecutor’s office.
