The Republicans’ immigration bills come into conflict with Gérald Darmanin’s project, which had planned to present its own text by the summer, once it has found a majority. Discussions between the executive and the Republicans are about to resume.
Possibility of a referendum on migration policy, reinstatement of the offense of illegal residence, and inclusion of assimilation in the Constitution: The Republicans have unveiled two offensive bills in order to “take back control” in terms of immigration. This initiative clashes with the government’s plans. Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior, had planned to present his own text by the summer, once he has found a majority. Discussions between the executive and the Republicans are about to resume.
Beginning of consultations
According to information from Europe 1, the consultations between Gérald Darmanin and Les Républicains will restart on Thursday. The Minister of the Interior will first meet with Rhône Senator François-Noël Buffet, before discussing this immigration bill on June 7 with the President of the Senate, Gérard Larcher.
The tenant of Place Beauvau has very little room for maneuver to hope to have his text voted on. Forced to satisfy the left wing of the macronie and the Modem which calls for balance, it also needs the voices of the right which, it, now carries a project of rupture in the form of an ultimatum addressed to the government.
An impossible equation to solve
However, the entourage of Gérald Darmanin ensures that a compromise remains possible with LR. Some proposals from Eric Ciotti’s party are already in the text, others can be studied, underlines an adviser. But not the constitutional amendment, which is however excluded, he specifies. But take it or leave it, warn the Republicans. The equation is therefore almost impossible to solve for Gérald Darmanin before the presentation of his bill to the Council of Ministers next July.
