Hitherto focused on foldable phones à la Mate X, the Huawei brand officially launches on the smartphone
clamshell with the P50 Pocket.
Competitor of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 from Samsung, which has already proven itself, the P50 Pocket will have to rely on Harmony OS.
A folding smartphone that aims to be high-end
There was a time when folding smartphones, whether they were in “book” or “clamshell” format, were more gadgets than anything else. Between the hinge problems and rather mid-range components, only the novelty side was really interesting. But that is starting to change a lot.
On the one hand, manufacturers are working to improve the junction between the two sides of the screen and, on the other hand, smartphones now offer real performance. This will therefore be the case with the Huawei P50 Pocket, which will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage (a second version exists with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage). The only downside, and not the least, is 5G connectivity… completely absent. The P50 Pocket will therefore be limited to 4G.
On the photo side, Huawei’s smartphone will offer a 40 MP main sensor, a 13 MP ultra-wide angle and a 32 MP “super-spectrum” sensor, designed primarily to improve colors as well as night photos.
Two screens and… Harmony OS
As always on current folding smartphones, two screens will be arranged on the Huawei P50 Pocket. But this time, there is no question of having a large external screen, since the Chinese brand has chosen to offer one in the form of a circle which will therefore allow little information to pass. It is equipped with a 1.04 inch OLED panel with a resolution of 340 x 340 pixels.
The main screen measures 6.9 inches and will also be equipped with an OLED panel, this time with a resolution of 2790 x 1188 pixels. The refresh rate is adaptive and will be able to go up to 120 Hz. Underneath all this is a 4000 mAh battery that can be charged at 40 W.
But what will undoubtedly hamper the most in all this beautiful data sheet, it is the operating system. It’s no longer a secret, Huawei and Android can no longer work together and the Chinese brand must rely on its in-house system: Harmony OS. If it can be used as is and rather well thought out, it does not have the experience acquired by Google or Apple on mobile operating systems and can therefore be a real obstacle to purchasing.
What’s more, the Huawei P50 Pocket is currently reserved for China and its arrival around the globe is not yet confirmed, if not unlikely. To satisfy your curiosity, know that the smartphone is offered at 8,988 yuan (1,250 euros excluding taxes) for the 8 GB version of RAM and 10,988 yuan (1,525 euros excluding taxes) for the 12 GB version.
