The BusKill USB cable locks or erases all data on a computer in seconds.
Journalists, activists from various backgrounds, whistleblowers or even crypto-currency traders are at the heart of a constant struggle to secure their data. If the protection of these is generally designed to ward off intrusions from a distance, few solutions tend to tackle the problem of physical attacks. Snatching or intimidation from an oppressive government, locking down a computer or even destroying the data it contains in seconds is now accessible to everyone.
Lock down and protect data physically
Responding to the code name of BusKill, the object is in the form of a USB cable with an ingenious breaking system. Based on magnetic connectors, just pull the cord to instantly lock the computer. Recently offered to the general public, BusKill is not at its first attempt, since the system was already available for more than two years as a DIY project. Anyone with the necessary equipment could then retrieve and compile the source code. However, it only worked on computers running Linux.
After a successful crowdfunding campaign, BusKill launches its cable ” plug-and-play ”Accompanied by compatible software. It evolves and is extended to Windows and macOS users. The product is designed for ease of use, including arming the system at the push of a button.
Designed for a high level of risk
According to the statements collected by TechCrunch with the creator of the project, Michael Altfield, BusKill is designed and developed to meet a high level of risk requirements. The reason the system was ported to Windows and macOS is the desire to allow the use of BusKill to certain audiences. Altfield specifically refers to journalists who do not use Linux and are not necessarily comfortable with the command line interface.
Nevertheless, the Linux system allows, because of its design, a more advanced configuration of BusKill with the triggering of the self-destruction of the data contained on the machine. Although the project was envisioned for journalists and activists, the USB cable in question may well find a new audience among cryptocurrency traders.
