The violence of the sounds contrasts with the calm of the images, simple aerial shots of the deserted streets of the most populous city in China.
The same evening, the video was massively shared on the main Chinese social networks. A unanimity that we had not seen at this level in China since the death of whistleblower doctor Li Wenliang, in Wuhan, in February 2020. And which did not fail to attract the attention of censorship . But, far from closing the case, the deletion of this video has only reinforced the frustration of Internet users, who have since competed in creativity to republish it, or refer to it.
The video begins with recordings of press conferences from the Shanghai Center for Epidemic Control and Prevention. A spokeswoman for the body said on March 26: “Can Shanghai be confined, even for a week? No, because Shanghai does not only belong to Shanghainese, Shanghai plays a crucial economic and social role for all of China. » The next day, Shanghai announced the confinement of the city for five days in two stages, in order to limit the economic impact. Almost a month later, the whole city is still confined.
A response to the “politicized” epidemic
These broken promises are followed by a short extract from a recording of an epidemiologist from the same institution, Zhu Weiping, who acknowledges to a resident of the megalopolis that the quarantine centers are overwhelmed and that obtaining an ambulance is difficult. Recorded on April 4, the conversation had a strong impact: the manager admitted that the response to the epidemic was “politicized” and that authorities would be better off allowing patients to self-isolate at home to avoid congested medical resources.
Then, there are the cries of newborns, from a video, also viral, showing young children isolated by the dozen in a hospital in Shanghai, because their parents had been diagnosed positive… The video had aroused outraged, yet many children continue to be separated from their parents today. We then hear the voice of a truck driver who protests to see the food he has just delivered rotting in his truck while the inhabitants are running out of food, because he is not authorized to unload for bureaucratic reasons. .
