The next iPhones could be equipped with a permanent lock screen allowing you to quickly consult useful information. Bloomberg sources report that Apple plans to make major improvements to the iPhone lock screen on iOS 16 and the iPhone 14 lineup.
News about possible features in the new version of iOS comes ahead of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022, which kicks off on June 6 and where Apple will show off what’s new in its operating systems and of its material.
The always-on lock screen would provide handy information at a glance, much like the always-on mode in 2019’s Apple Watch 5 (and later), plus new widget-like features and backgrounds screen.
New only for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
Bloomberg reports that the always-on mode will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Recent rumors suggest that the iPhone 14 will feature the A16 chip, a new pill-shaped Face ID camera notch, and a 48-megapixel main camera.
Supporting the idea of an always-on display, iPhone 14 models are expected to feature an OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, but also use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology. . LTPO technology allows AMOLED displays to refresh at high rates when needed and at much lower rates for static information to save power.
LTPO technology enables high resolution, adjustable refresh rate and ultra-low power consumption, but it comes with a 5-10% price premium. LTPO technology enabled the Apple Watch 5 to run its screen all the time and was the basis for the ProMotion smooth scrolling feature of the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. These iPhones support refresh rates between 10 Hz (refresh 10 times per second) and 120 Hz.
A new, more expensive iPhone?
The iPhone 14 could also cost $100 more (and therefore, given Apple’s policy, much more in euros) than the 2021 lineup. Initial supply of new models could also be low, due to containment measures imposed by China in Shanghai last March.
