A Bloomberg report attests to a new transformation to come for Apple iPhones: they will turn into contactless payment terminals, without requiring any accessory.
If there is a whole ecosystem of ordering, payment and invoicing solutions on iOS, iPhones need accessories to manage cash collection. This may soon no longer be the case, Bloomberg announcing that Apple intends to make its smartphones contactless payment terminals. Since the takeover of Mobeewave by the Californian firm in 2020, it is an expected function, which could make its arrival “in the coming months” in favor of an iOS update.
The operation should not be very different from that of Samsung POS, the contactless payment solution for Samsung mobiles developed by Mobeewave in 2019. Initially deployed in Canada, on the lands of the start-up, this payment system accepting cards contactless banking, as well as payments via NFC such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, had ended up being offered in many other countries.
An arrival still unclear
For the time being, Bloomberg says it has no information on the practical implementation of the service likely to be of interest to the self-employed and small businesses. It is not known if it will be presented as a new option included in Apple Pay or if its arrival will be accompanied by a new program, potentially with a banking partner. To be sure, you will probably have to wait – at best – for the deployment of iOS 15.4 in its beta version.
