Junta allows Cond to leave country for medical exam

CONAKRY (Reuters) – The military junta, which seized power in Guinea in September, allowed former President Alpha Cond to leave the country for a medical exam, a message read on TV on Friday.

The junta, which has chosen the name of the National Assembly and Development Committee (CNRD), has indicated that the former president will only be able to stay abroad for a month.

A group of mutinous soldiers ousted President Alpha Cond from power on September 5 and then proclaimed the dissolution of the Constitution and the government.

Alpha Cond, who is 83 years old, was detained by the coup plotters who argued that poverty and endemic corruption had pushed them to remove the head of state.

The former Guinean president was re-elected in October 2020 for a third five-year term following a constitutional reform criticized by the opposition.
