Who or what is Jya anyway? Jya is a Smartmi brand and therefore part of the Xiaomi ecosystem. Smartmi, founded in 2014, specializes in home climate and includes fans, electric heaters, humidifiers and air purifiers in the consumer sector. Jya, on the other hand, only deals with air filters in the upper price range. In addition to the Fjord Pro Air Purifier tested here, Jya also offers the “normal” Fjord Air Purifier, which is a whole corner cheaper at 399 euros.

If your eyes are already burning, then you can save with Jya until March 14th at 9:00 a.m. CET – you can currently get both the Jya Fjord Pro and the “small” Jya Fjord in the early bird offer for 40 euros cheaper. By the way, Jya sends the air filters from a warehouse in Europe. The shipping should therefore not take too long, and you are on the safe side with regard to customs duties.

Unboxing of the Jya Fjord Pro Air Purifier

Even before the unboxing, you notice: “Whoa, that thing is huge!” With a footprint of 31 by 30 centimeters and a height of 72 centimeters, the Jya Fjord Pro Air Purifier is a real piece of furniture. The design in black and silver is simple and fits easily into modern living spaces. And if you like it individual, you can stick furniture foil on the silver plastic elements. The power switch is located on the bottom rear of the device – and off you go!

Jya installs a circular OLED touchscreen in the top right of the front. In the standard view, the air filter always shows the measured fine dust value (PM2.5) in µg/m3. Below you can see the words “pollen” and “TVOC”, i.e. for allergens and “total volatile organic compounds”, i.e. volatile (gaseous) organic compounds. The color reveals how good or bad the measured values ​​are at the moment. With a swipe to the left you can see the status of the PM10 fine dust particles in four levels. Pollen, dust, pet dander or bacteria fall under PM2.5 and PM10.

If you swipe right from the home screen, you get to the setting for the ventilation grille on the top. Here you can set the angle to 30, 60 or 90 degrees. Settings for display brightness and WLAN connection as well as the state of the filter follow further to the right. Last but not least, you can switch the operating mode between “Active”, “Night” and “Automatic” by tapping on the home screen. The more active, the more effective the filter effect, but also the louder the device – although the noise level is still tolerable even at the maximum level (manufacturer information: maximum 64 dB(A), in sleep mode 18.8 dB(A)).

A wide LED below the large ventilation grille on the front shows you a summary of the current measured values, from green for “super” to dark red for “poor”. In the following picture it lights up red because the air filter is missing.

There is a large and a small flap on the back of the case. The huge air filter is hidden behind the large flap – it is immediately clear why Jya builds the air purifier so large. The air filter lasts about 300 days, the app informs you about the wear. At 79 euros, a replacement filter is not exactly cheap, but on the other hand, better breathing air is also worth the money. The sensors of the Fjord Pro Air Purifier are hidden behind the small flap – but more on that later.

Setup of the Jya Fjord Pro Air Purifier

To connect the Fjord Pro Air Purifier to your smartphone, you first need the Smartmi Link app (Apple App Store / Google Play Store). After starting, simply click on the plus symbol in the app and follow the instructions on your smartphone to connect the air filter to your WiFi. In the test with the iOS app, it didn’t even take three minutes.

The only drop of bitterness at this point: Unfortunately, you cannot currently use the Jya air filters with the Xiaomi Home app, but at least with Apple HomeKit, Alexa and the Google Assistant. Connecting to Apple Homekit was not a problem in the test. With the iPhone in the same WLAN, the Fjord Pro Air Purifier was automatically detected. I only had to look for the eight-digit code under the air filter flap. After the connection has been established, you will also see the most important key data of the air filter in your Apple Home overview.

But now to the manufacturer app:

In the Smartmi Link app you will find the most important data at a glance. Above the product image you can see the status of the PM10 and TVOC readings in four gradations (super, good, medium, bad) and the PM2.5 reading in µg/m3. At the bottom of the screen, the app shows you the room temperature and humidity. While there is a chronological progression of the measured values ​​for particulate matter and TVOC, this is unfortunately not the case for temperature and humidity.

You can also switch the Fjord Pro Air Purifier on and off in the app and switch between the different fan modes. As on the OLED touchscreen, there are still settings for the angle of the ventilation grille and the display brightness – the display can also be switched off completely for the bedroom. You will also find a wear indicator for the filter in the app.

There are two options exclusively in the app: First, you can switch the sound effects for the air purifier on and off here. And second, there is a timer function, so the Jya Fjord Pro Air Purifier only runs at certain times of the day or on certain days.

Practice: Checking the filter performance

The key technical data of the Jya Fjord Pro Air Purifier is impressive to read. According to the manufacturer, the air purifier is suitable for rooms up to 66 m2 in size, the “Clean Air Delivery Rate” (CADR) should be 550 cubic meters per hour for air contaminated with fine dust. The binding of volatile hydrocarbons is somewhat slower; here the air purifier achieves 250 cubic meters of clean air per hour. The manufacturer also promises that the NanoGuard filter is at HEPA-H13 level – and thus filters 99.99% of the 0.1 micron particles out of the air – i.e. germs, viruses, bacteria & Co.

Admittedly, due to the lack of a spectrometer, it is difficult for us to assess the actual filter performance of the Jya Fjord Pro Air Purifier. However, I am allergic to early bloomers and have noticed a noticeable improvement in my allergy symptoms since using the air purifier in the home office – and the air quality in the neighboring bedroom has apparently also benefited. Fexofenadine remains in the drawer, at least for the time being.
