With dimensions of 105 x 45 millimeters, it is about the same size as a top sponge, but significantly thinner with a thickness of 14.7 millimeters. Since the memory only weighs around 76 grams, it can easily disappear into your shirt or trouser pocket when you’re on the move.
Design and workmanship
The housing is not only compact, but also robust. The SSD is encased in an aluminum housing. The memory should be able to withstand minor shocks and falls. At least the housing has appropriate certification according to MIL-STD.

The Kioxia SSD is only available in one color – a matt silver-grey tone, which means it matches most current Windows laptops perfectly. But the portable storage can not only be connected to this, but also to many other devices.
compatibility
According to Kioxia, the Exceria Plus Portable SSD is also compatible with Macs and MacBooks from macOS High Sierra 10.13, iPads with iPad OS 14.6 or later, Android phones running Android 11 or later, as well as the PS4, PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S. However, if you switch between devices, the SSD may sometimes have to be reformatted, so parallel use on a cell phone and PC, for example, is not always possible.
On Android, for example, when we switched from the PC to various smartphones, we received a message indicating that the data carrier was supposedly damaged, even though we had switched between exFAT and NTFS formatting. However, these problems did not occur on the iPad, where parallel work is possible without any problems.

Nice: Everything you need for the connection is usually already included with the SSD. The manufacturer includes a USB C to USB A cable and a USB C to USB C cable. An adapter may only be necessary for older iPads. Unfortunately, both cables are comparatively short at a length of 30 centimeters. By the way, the Kioxia Exceria Plus Portable SSD only offers one USB C port on the case itself. There is a status LED next to it that shows you whether the SSD is currently active.
speed
The Kioxia Exceria Plus Portable SSD is available in three sizes: 2 terabytes, 1 terabytes and 500 gigabytes. Kioxia promises a maximum read and write speed of 1,050 and 1,000 MB/s respectively. This puts it on a par with the competition in this price segment.
However, you can only achieve the maximum speed if the device to which you connect the SSD offers a USB 3.2 Gen2 interface. For devices with USB 3.2 Gen1, however, the maximum transfer rate is already halved. We checked the speed using the Crystal Disk Mark tool. The test showed that the Kioxia Exceria Plus Portable SSD comes very close to the theoretical maximum speed. So the manufacturer doesn’t promise too much.

However, there are isolated reports online that the Kioxia Exceria Plus Portable SSD overheats under load. We were unable to reproduce this. For us the temperature always stayed within limits at 43 degrees Celsius. We don’t expect any problems with everyday tasks, especially since the Kioxia Exceria Plus Portable SSD quickly dissipates waste heat via the metal housing.
software
With SSD Utility, Kioxia also offers suitable software for the SSD. However, this cannot be found on the memory itself, but must be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website or from our download archive.
It offers the option of securely deleting the data on the hard drive (Secure Erase), installing firmware updates or protecting the SSD with a password. The tool is clear and easy to use.
Price-performance
The Kioxia Exceria Plus Portable SSD is available online in the 1 terabyte version starting at around 80 euros. The 2 terabyte model costs around 140 euros. We couldn’t currently find any offers for the 500 gigabyte model. The 1 terabyte model in particular is inexpensive compared to similar competing models. The 2 terabyte version, however, is on par with the competition.
