Koei Tecmo confirms its good health and thanks the mobile

Like last year and the year before, Koei Tecmo is on track to achieve a year of around 500 million euros in turnover and 200 million euros in profit. The mid-term results (April-September) are in any case going in this direction and are even ahead of last year, with the exception of operating profit which fell by 24%. During the semester, Koei Tecmo was able to count on the releases of Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening (150,000 copies), Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg (110,000 copies) and especially Fate/Samurai Remnant. The latter is credited with 250,000 copies as of September 30, but the much-loved action-RPG from our DocSavage crossed the 300,000 copies mark on October 6, as announced by Koei Tecmo.

The smartphone in great shape

However, these releases cannot explain the good results announced here by Koei Tecmo, which is also an important player in the mobile market in Asia. Released respectively on August 31 and September 23 in Japan, Nobunaga’s Ambition: Shutsujin and Atelier Resleriana joined other recent releases such as Dragon Quest Champions (Japan) and Sangokushi Senkiban (China). Make no mistake, if Koei Tecmo sold 3.45 million console and PC games during the half-year (including 70% downloads), it is mobile that carries the turnover on its shoulders . At the top of their form since the start of the year, smartphone games generated 138 million euros compared to 93 million euros for other platforms (additional content included). Corollary to the importance of mobile, Asia represents 56% of Koei Tecmo’s turnover.

These results support Koei Tecmo in its short-term ambitions. The priority objectives by March 2025 have not changed:

  • Exceed 250 million euros in operating profit
  • Release a new console license with 5 million sales
  • Release a console game with 2 million sales each year
  • Have a smartphone game that brings in 2 billion yen per month (12.6 million euros)
  • Have several smartphones that bring in 1 billion yen per month (6.3 million euros).

The new license supposed to be able to reach 5 million sales is obviously the project that interests us the most. As it stands, Koei Tecmo has never indicated whether this is Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin (which will be released on PS5 in 2024) or a game that has not yet been announced.
