  • 20 residents from Schwanden GL will be allowed to return to their apartments from Saturday morning.
  • They had to leave shortly before Christmas because of renewed debris flows in the landslide area.
  • For additional people, the return will be delayed.

The situation in the “Wagenrunse” slide area has now calmed down, as the municipality of Glarus Süd writes. On December 22nd and 23rd, up to 2,000 cubic meters of mud entered the district and threatened to interrupt the water and electricity supplies. Around 25 people had to be evacuated. A new entrance has now been created for two affected apartment buildings, as the municipality writes.

No entry to basement floors

The remaining buildings in the affected area are still not allowed to be entered. In addition, all rooms in the basement are closed. The municipality informed all affected residents by telephone about the possibility of returning and at the same time assured them that any hotel costs would be covered until January 4th.

There is still a risk of 60,000 cubic meters of material slipping into the depths – twice as much as was lost at the end of August. At that time, a number of houses were destroyed and damaged.

The area now affected is only a few meters from the so-called red zone, where the debris flows in August caused the most damage. In mid-December it became clear that the 40 people affected in this zone would never be able to return to their homes. The buildings are even supposed to be demolished.
