Alarm on Monday evening in Lyss BE: heavily armed police officers cordoned off the train station across a large area, and a special unit was also on site. According to the Bern canton police, the reason for the large police action was an allegedly armed man who is said to have threatened several people. He was finally located and arrested in an apartment in Lyss.
“At first we were really scared because we didn’t know what was going on,” said eyewitness Karan Singh (18) the day after in an interview with Blick. He runs the Millennium Bar & Restaurant directly opposite the train station. Already after noon the restaurateur noticed that the police had been conspicuously present.
“There were policemen everywhere”
“Towards evening the line-up got bigger and bigger,” continues the 18-year-old. The street and train station have been closed. “Then a van from the special unit drove up.” Around ten to fifteen emergency services in full gear broke into a house entrance very close by, while a helicopter circled over the village.
“We were told by the police at around 8 p.m. to stay in the restaurant,” said Singh. “Our guests couldn’t go out either, our food deliverers were locked out and there were policemen everywhere. We got a bit hectic there. “
Man resisted arrest
About two hours later, the young Bernese witnessed the arrest. “I saw them handcuff a man from the neighborhood. He struggled, so they had to pull him, or they almost carried him into the car, ”he describes the scene. “We know him, but only by sight.” He lives very close by. Now and then he would have been heard arguing loudly with his wife.
The landlord does not know what preceded the police operation on Monday. Explosive: He suspects that the arrested person even called him at the restaurant that evening. “My employee took an anonymous call between 7 and 8 p.m. and it was a man’s turn who frantically asked what was going on here and why we were closed,” says Singh. “As panicked as he was, we assume that it was him.”
Arrested again at large
At the place of residence of the arrested no one dares to speak in front of the camera. However, a neighbor said that the arrested man had German roots and lived here with his wife. “He is self-employed and recently told me that business was not going so well because of Corona,” she recalls. He is the only resident who has “a large pouf” in his parking lot in the garage. If you talk to him about it, he reacts quickly and aggressively, says another woman.
The Bern canton police do not provide any details about the Lyss threat due to privacy protection. When asked by Blick, she simply wrote: “The man was unarmed when he was arrested. He was taken to a police station for further clarification and released on Tuesday afternoon. “
