Microsoft: additions and removals
Microsoft has announced major developments for Windows 11 with the introduction of a built-in file compression feature, allowing users to change the compression level and method directly from File Explorer. This update, currently in testing in Windows 11 Build 26040 or later, will make it easier to manage compressed files without resorting to external programs like WinRAR or 7-Zip. Additionally, Microsoft Copilot Pro is coming to Android and iOS, offering access to GPT-4 Turbo and custom GPTs for various supports, promising improved performance and plugin integration to expand the tool’s capabilities.
In a move to rationalize its software, Microsoft has also decided to remove WordPad and Cortana from Windows 11, ending 28 years of service. This decision is part of the company’s desire to focus on more sophisticated applications. At the same time, Microsoft Edge on Android is preparing to launch support for extensions, a previously unpublished feature on the mobile browser, enough to set the browser apart from Google Chrome and align it with browsers like Mozilla Firefox or Kiwi.

For its part, Google recently announced the end of the cached web pages feature in its search results, a decision motivated by significant improvements in the reliability of web page loading. On a happier note, Google is expanding Bard’s capabilities by integrating free image generation via ImageFX in most countries, as well as expanding Gemini Pro to support over 40 languages and be available in over 230 countries and territories. ImageFX, powered by Imagen 2 from Google DeepMind, offers an interface for creating images from simple textual descriptions, enough to overshadow Dall-E and Midjourney!

The Browser Company has launched Arc Search, a new search app for iPhone that merges the functionality of an AI chatbot with web browsing, providing a user experience free of distractions and focused on search results. This application, through its “Browse for me” button, promises to organize information in a more digestible way, by scanning at least six websites to present a personalized web page responding to the user’s request. Arc Browser also adds new AI-powered features to improve search and bookmark management.
