Like every year, thousands of barely unwrapped Christmas gifts have already found their way onto online resale sites.
It is now a (sad) tradition, thousands of French people rush to resell their Christmas gifts on the Internet, a few hours (or even less) after unwrapping them. Thus, at the end of each year, thousands of Christmas gifts are found on online sales platforms between individuals. Hundreds of thousands of Christmas gifts already on sale
Recently, according to a study conducted by Kantar for the eBay platform, we learned that no less than 23% of French people planned to resell their Christmas gifts, in the event of disappointment or duplicates. The latest figures communicated by Rakuten clearly point in this direction.
Indeed, on December 25 at noon, no fewer than 400,000 new ads had already been posted on the Rakuten platform, an increase of around 5% compared to 2022. The same goes for eBay, with around 300,000 gifts on sale on Christmas Day, a figure which could rise to 3 million in early January.
The Prix Goncourt, Asterix and Harry Potter at the top of (re)sales
Among the most sold Christmas gifts this year 2023, we find the book Watch over her, signed Jean-Batiste Andrea, crowned with the Prix Goncourt. The latest adventures of Asterix are also experiencing a peak in resales, with the album The White Irisjust like Airpods Pro or the Nintendo Switch version of the Hogwarts Legacy game.
Still according to Rakuten, just under 45% of those surveyed resell their gifts because they are considered unnecessary. A little less than 40% resell them because they don’t like them, and 24% indicate that the gift in question acts as a duplicate.
Obviously, this trend aimed at reselling barely unwrapped Christmas presents is not a French tradition, it is a global phenomenon.
Also, it may be time to look out for online sales platforms, you could well get your hands on that much-desired smartphone, console or video game, in new condition and at a (slightly) reduced price.
