RWE warns of gas shortages in power plants

Some German gas storage facilities are almost empty after throttled deliveries from Russia. Despite promises from the Kremlin, too little natural gas is currently flowing to Germany. The energy supplier RWE is therefore already issuing worrying forecasts for some of its power plants in North Rhine-Westphalia.

According to a report, the energy supplier RWE has warned its trading partners on the EEX electricity exchange of power plant failures due to a lack of gas. In the period up to April 1, operations in several power plants in North Rhine-Westphalia could be interrupted, the reason being the increased risk of delivery problems for natural gas, quoted the newspaper “Welt am Sonntag” from a report by the company to the information platform of the electricity exchange EEX.

This could affect the Gersteinwerk power plant in the Unna district and several upstream gas turbines in the Weisweiler power plant. It was a precautionary measure, said an RWE spokesman for the newspaper. “With the report, we are signaling to market participants in good time and transparently that a scenario that may occur this winter is possible.”

Gas is currently scarce in Europe. Prices have skyrocketed in the wake of the economic recovery after the height of the corona crisis. Russia is accused of reducing its gas supplies to Germany for political reasons. Russia denies this and stresses that it will comply with all delivery obligations.
