Lockheed Martin: recovery of the OSIRIS-REx capsule

(CercleFinance.com) – The OSIRIS-REx capsule has landed safely with NASA’s first-ever asteroid sample.

NASA’s mission – designed, built and flown by Lockheed Martin – aims to discover new knowledge about the building blocks of life in our solar system.

‘Scientists hope this will tell us more about the origin of the organic materials that led to life on Earth and help us better understand how planets formed,’ the group says.

A specialized recovery team led by Lockheed Martin, comprised of representatives from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA Johnson Space Center and the University of Arizona, secured the capsule.

“The landing was safe, the recovery was a huge success and we are excited that the next phase of this mission can now begin,” said Kyle Griffin, vice president and general manager of Space commercial civilian at Lockheed Martin.

‘This particular sample return is monumental – scientists are close to opening a capsule containing the earliest histories of our solar system.’
