Man United continue to relax: Donetsk concedes heavy EL beatings at Feyenoord

Man United continue in a relaxed manner
Donetsk receives a violent EL beating at Feyenoord

With a draw from the first leg, Shakhtar Donetsk hopes to advance to the round of 16 in the Europa League, but are lost at Feyenoord Rotterdam. Manchester United don’t have much trouble at Betis Sevilla, while record winners FC Sevilla tremble in the quarter-finals.

With a victory for the history books, Feyenoord Rotterdam stormed into the quarter-finals of the Europa League. The team from the Netherlands didn’t give the Ukrainian top club Shakhtar Donetsk the slightest chance in the 7-1 (3-0) in the round of 16 second leg and easily advanced after the 1-1 draw in the first leg. Record winners FC Sevilla and title contenders Manchester United also advanced to the next round.

Double goalscorers Oussama Idrissi (49′, 60′) and Orkun Kökcü (24′, 38’/penalty) shone for Rotterdam. Santiago Gimenez (9th), Alireza Jahanbakhsh (65th) and Danilo (67th) were also successful. The only “nuisance” for Feyenoord: Because Kevin Kelsy (87th) scored for Donetsk shortly before the end, Rotterdam missed the record victory in the Europa League. The Dutch have instead shared the top spot in this statistic with Olympique Lyon, who also defeated AZ Alkmaar 7-1 in 2017.

Sevilla, currently only 13th in the domestic league, lost 0-1 (0-1) at Fenerbahce Istanbul, but are still through due to the 2-0 from the first leg. In the 41st minute, Enner Valencia used a hand penalty for the lead, which referee Michael Oliver decided after consulting the video evidence. In the final stages, Sevilla also called for a penalty, but in vain, and saved the lead over the long stoppage time.

After the clear 4-1 win at Old Trafford at home, Manchester United also won the second leg at Betis Sevilla 1-0 (0-0), Marcus Rashford (56th) scored the goal of the day with a brilliant long-range shot after the break. It was the sixth goal of the Europa League season for the England striker, taking him to the top of the competition’s goalscoring chart for the first time. Marcel Sabitzer, on loan from Bayern, also made his international debut at United.

The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Friday (1 p.m.) at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The round of eight will be played on April 13th and 20th, with the semi-finals on May 11th and 18th. The final of the second highest European club competition will take place in Budapest on May 31st.
