“I wouldn’t call it a holiday,” says Mario Gavranovic three days after the drama quarter-final at the European Championships. A few days with his brother in Ticino, a few more with daughter Leonie and wife Anita on the Croatian coast – and the Dynamo Zagreb striker is serious again.
On Tuesday Gavranovic has to play as the first national team star in a mandatory game. As if flying at the European Championships wasn’t enough, Gavranovic travels to Reykjavik – Iceland’s capital. The striker comes against Valur in the first round of the Champions League qualification (71st). Zagreb won the second leg 2-0 and prevailed 5-2 in the duel.
Only three days later, on Friday, the league opener in Croatia. Gavranovic is in the starting line-up and has to run the full length. Understandable given 17 goals and 8 assists last season. Still steep just two weeks after the European Championship fight against Spain. Gavranovic can’t prevent his Zagreb from losing 2-0.
Is he moving to Turkey?
It is still unclear whether Gavranovic will stay with Dynamo until the end of the transfer window. “I don’t know what will happen in the next few weeks,” said the native of Ticino shortly after the European Championship.
According to Turkish media reports, Gavranovic, whose contract expires next summer, has been offered to FC Fenerbahce. It is quite possible that Dynamo is looking for a decent transfer proceeds after “Gavras” top EM performance. Despite its considerable share in the championship title last season.
For Gavranovic it would be the last chance to switch to a bigger club again. However, he recently emphasized that he felt “very comfortable” in Zagreb. Even if the club hardly gives him vacation time. (dad)
