A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco on Friday evening.
According to initial media reports, there were also fatalities and destroyed buildings. There was initially no official information available.
According to the US Earthquake Observatory USGS, the epicenter of the quake was about 72 kilometers southwest of Marrakech at a depth of 18.5 kilometers.
The quakes were felt widely shortly after 11:00 p.m. (local time). The first images show people gathering outdoors. There are initial reports of fatalities and video footage of collapsed buildings. Much information cannot be verified for the time being.

According to the USGS, an earthquake of this magnitude is very unlikely in this region, although not impossible. There has not been such a strong earthquake within 500 kilometers of the current location in over 120 years.
